something pretty – the pattern

22 May

about this pattern:

i found this pretty picture on pinterest and was totally smitten. after a lot of googling and searching i wasn’t able to find the pattern, so decided to figure the pattern out myself. dottie angel‘s pictures of her thrifty find was very helpful, and i was happy to find out that this is actually a pretty simple pattern, so novices – don’t be alarmed! just go ahead and try it out 🙂 for more pictures, check out this, this or this post.

about yarn/hook:

any yarn with corresponding hook will do, i find that moving up a hook size from what the yarn says makes a softer material that would work better with a blanket. i’ve made pillows with these squares so that wouldn’t matter so much. i used sandnes duo (dk weight) and hook 4 mm and the square measures 8×8 cm, with garnstudio drops paris (aran) and hook 5 mm one square is a bit over 10×10.

first a couple of basics:

1. one flower petal: 5 dc, take hook off loop, put hook (from front to back) through 3rd chain (the last ch of space before the 5 dc) and the ”loose loop”, yo, pull through both loops on hook.

2. the first dc on row is made by chain 3

begin with colour of flower. chain 4, make circle with one slip stitch

1st round:

chain one, 7 sc in circle. end round with slip st in chain.

2nd round:

make 1 flower petal in each sc with chain 3 between each one, end round with slip st in 3rd chain at beginning of round = 8 petals

3rd round:

sl st into the first chain 3. make 2 flower petals in each chain 3, and chain 3 between each flower petal = 16 petals in round. end round with slip st in 3rd chain at beginning of round.

change to background colour

4th round:

sl st into the first chain 3. *3 dc in the first 3 chain 3’s, (3 treble crochet, chain 2, 3 treble crochet) in the next chain 3. repeat from * 3 more times. end round with slip st in 3rd chain at beginning of round.

joining:

i crochet the squares together with slip stitch. lay out two rows of squares, begin with the first two, make a loop on hook, put hook from front to back through back part of dc on last row, first on one, then the corresponding one on the other, yarn over and pull through three loops on hook. continue like this, when you reach the end of the first side of these two squares just go on and start with two new ones all across the length/width of your blanket/pillow, like so:

i’m publishing this patten un-tested, so feel free to let me know if there are any mistakes/uncertainties for me to correct!

Dette er eit fint mønster! Har akkurat oppdaga det samme teppet, og har fundert på det samme mønsteret. Og skreiv om mine forsøk på bloggen min idag 🙂
Likar spesielt godt samanheklinga di. Veldig fin!

Thanks so so much for posting this pattern. My daughter announced last week that she wanted me to crochet her a round blanket and I have been searching for a pattern ever since. This one is just perfect and I can’t wait to start this project. Thanks again. BTW, love the colours you chose. x

  7. GrundGlad May 29, 2011 at 9:55 am #

Rigtig fin og brugervenlig opskrift (jeg har ikke hæklet så længe, men havde ingen problemer med at følge den) og fantastisk farvekombination, du har valgt til dine puder. Tusind tak for inspirationen 🙂

This is simply lovely! I’ve been swooning over the same blanket and couldn’t find a similar pattern either. Thanks a million, I’m ready for some quality time with my hooks!

I pinned this one too! Thank you so much for figuring it out. My efforts resulted in a mess. I can’t wait to try it!

I love this pattern and wanted to make it right away. I have a question though. When you are making the first petal in a round, which stitch do you go into after the 5 dcs since there is no chain 3 beforehand (except the chain 3 that represents the first dc)?

I hope my question makes sense!

    Thank you in advance!

    • mille June 6, 2011 at 10:00 pm #

Yes, you make sense 🙂 I go into the 3rd of the chain 3 that represents the first dc, actually, as that’s all there is to choose from! Hope that will work for you, too…

      • Pam September 5, 2012 at 5:47 pm #

I started this yesterday and it is just beautiful. The pattern instructions were easy to fill out BUT…..there is nothing about a border. Can you add instructions for that?? What did you use for a border??

      • mille November 27, 2012 at 12:15 am #

Hey Pam, I think I just single crocheted the front and the back of the pillow together. You might be planning for a blanket, I just made a pillow 🙂

    • Jenny February 8, 2015 at 3:00 pm #

Here is a video made by Erin (linked much further below) that shows the square being made step by step. For a beginner and visual learner like me, I needed the video to make Mille’s fabulous pattern make sense. Thank you to you both!

  14. PricklyBear July 6, 2011 at 1:52 am #

Hej 🙂 Question! After round 2, when you’ve made all petals and you’ve just finished the last petal (pull through both loops on hook) – do you right away slip stitch to the third in chain (which is the chain which you make first before starting to make petal 1)?
    Takk !

  15. lisa July 9, 2011 at 2:14 pm #

  24. Sarah Lau Parker (@sarahparker) July 9, 2012 at 4:39 pm #

I am among the throng that was enthralled with that blanket and am so grateful you came up with the pattern. Question though, in the original blanket and in the original one you made, the edging is a bit different — the squares on the ends seemed curved and there is a big gentle scallop around each square. Would you pretty please share how you did that? I’d be forever grateful. 🙂 thank you!

  25. Jen July 14, 2012 at 10:54 am #

This is such a great pattern. I am a beginner and I’ve tried to start this numerous times, but I just can’t get it right. Is there any chance of having more steps, or photos. That would be perfect! In the meantime, I looked up popcorn crochet, which helped a bit… still it doesn’t look as tidy as yours. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  26. kim August 3, 2012 at 5:18 pm #

i was wondering the approximate yarn amounts used? i plan on doing this for 2 of my daughters. trying to estimate how much yarn to buy

  27. Nisha August 7, 2012 at 10:07 am #

    For all the beginners:

I am veryyy new to crocheting and had only attempted very small projects…like hair bows etc..until I saw this! I fell in love with this and had to attempt it!

Just like most of you…I got stuck right after finishing my 7 Single crochets! I couldnt understand at all what I had to do next…but I was determined! After a lot a lot of research…i DID it and made my first square!! I am veryyyy happy with the result! So basically,,,the petals that we are making is actually Popcorn Stitch..there is a lot of youtube videos on it…once you figure out the popcorn stitch, you will see it coming through!

    Good Luck everone!

  28. Sowmya August 9, 2012 at 3:37 pm #

I have been looking for similar pattern, your pattern gave me the idea of how to start.
Thanks for posting this pattern… I’m Loving it !

  29. DeAnn August 12, 2012 at 6:19 am #

I would love to try this pattern! It is so gorgeous!! Is there a video tutorial on how to do the “1. one flower petal: 5 dc, take hook off loop, put hook (from front to back) through 3rd chain (the last ch of space before the 5 dc) and the ”loose loop”, yo, pull through both loops on hook.” part?

I’m newer to crocheting and I understand most the pattern just not where I’m supposed to take the chain off the hook. If you could let me know that would be great! Thanks so much!

This is a lovely pattern, I hope you don’t mind if I link to it on my new blog?

. one flower petal: 5 dc, take hook off loop, put hook (from front to back) through 3rd chain (the last ch of space before the 5 dc) and the ”loose loop”, yo, pull through both loops on hook. Can you please post a detailed photo of this or something? It doesn’t make sense at all, because it doesn’t mention anywhere making three chain before starting on the petals?? I’m not new to crochet either!! Thank you!!

  34. Elizabeth September 9, 2012 at 6:06 am #

Could you please put a video on you tube of you making a block! Please it is so lovely but I am not picking up your written directions

  35. debiyorston September 15, 2012 at 3:14 pm #

Hi Mille, well you’ve created a beautiful square that is so much fun to make! I made a few cushion covers and I love them. Also, I tweaked the pattern a little here and there. I get a lot of requests for the pattern from my readers and was wondering, if you would be ok with it if I wrote a blog post about them, linking to your blog, and writing the pattern with my little tweaks? Please let me know what you think.

    hugs,

I’m for some reason having issues making my slip stitch to join the blocks together look like yours. Yours stitch looks like it is flat, mine keeps going to one side of the join…I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong. Love these blocks though! going to make a VERY cute blanket for my friends new baby girl 🙂

Isn’t it funny how it only takes asking the question…and then you figure it out on your own? 🙂 I thought I had tried everything…I was missing that key point, front to back on both squares. Got it now! Thanks for sharing the pattern!

      • Tori February 17, 2013 at 1:56 am #

I’m having trouble with the same thing! Could you clarify in a little bit more detail how you’re supposed to do it? Thank you!!

      • Vickie February 17, 2013 at 8:36 pm #

I’m having trouble with joining the squares as well. Could you explain what you mean by front to back on both squares?

      • Freedom Stitches February 18, 2013 at 3:04 am #

You work on the outside stitch of your sc on both squares, you run your hook down from the top (right side of your work) I set my squares next to each other, start with the corner of the 1st square and I run my hook, from the right side of my work down through the outside stitch of the sc then I take the 2nd square and continue my hook through the corner outside stitch and work a slip stitch. I hope this makes sense, it is much easier than it sounds 😉

      • Anastasia June 17, 2014 at 5:03 am #

I think I figured out where I was going wrong: make sure the ball/length of yarn you’re working from is UNDERNEATH the blanket when you are joining. It was so frustrating not knowing what the problem was!

  44. Elle January 6, 2013 at 4:15 pm #

What brand of yarn is that???

Hello Mille, I love your Something pretty blanket. Love it. I am a newbie and would love to try and make it.

What kind of yarn would you use so it can be wash if need be??? I live in the Michigan

I would like to use 3 shades of pink, 2 shades of lavender, 2 shades of blue and maybe some green. I would like to make the blanket for on the back of my sofa so maybe the size of a single bed. How much yarn do you think I would need???

Do you have any Photo tutorial on how you made the Something Pretty Blocks???

I read that someone suggested using a crochet hook larger than the yarn called for??? Would you suggest this do.

Sorry for all the questions. I am going shopping Wednesday for the Yarn so I am hoping your get this message so you can make some suggestion to me. Thanks
    Hugs Judy

Hi! Just finished all my squares and I can’t get the joining to work! Is there a good video tutorial that is good that can visually show me! Love this pattern! Thank you so much

    • Anastasia June 17, 2014 at 5:05 am #

Make sure the yarn you are drawing from is underneath the work at all times. So you go down into the back loop of the first square, then down into the back loop of the second square, yarn over, then draw through all three loops. Hope this helps, I struggled for quite a while before I figured out where I was going wrong.

I’m working on a kind of hodgepodge granny/square afghan for my daughter, bunch of different colors and stitches, lots of crazy colors. I was wondering to increase the size of this square to 7 or 8 inches would you just follow the pattern by putting two petals in every 3 ch space around?

  63. B June 29, 2013 at 7:37 pm #

I ‘m having diffuculty with the pattern as well, I’ve noticed I’m not the only one but the owner of the pattern doesn’t seem to be answering any of the questions… for those of you who found the pattern easy to make can you elaborate a bit? I’m just confused about how to make the petals. I literally cannot find a similar pattern anywhere! so this one is all I have to go by! thanks!

    • Karen July 25, 2013 at 1:53 am #

I am a novice but didnt seem to have the trouble others are having with the pattern Did you read all the notes as well?? your starting petal should be chain 3 and then 5 double crochets take the hook out of the lopp after the 5th dc and go backward to the chain three you started with put your hook in the top of the chain three and then grab the loop you left loose, yarn over and pull thru then chain 3 and 5 dc and continue I hope this helps to clarify Its a bit tricky at first so dont give up Also make sure you are using the right yarn and hook combination G or H for most yarns but F for baby weight

Thank you so much for this great pattern! The instructions were clear and easy to follow; I was looking for something nice to do with leftover yarn and wanted something more than just plain granny squares; just finished the first square and it turned out just like the picture (wish I could say that for some of the cooking recipes I’ve tried 🙂 ). Thank you so much; love it!

I, like many others, am fairly new to crocheting. I love these directions because I understood them enough so that I was able to make my first swatch for a baby blanket for a friend. 🙂

Question though: my flower/square turned out pretty round… in fact it almost looks a bit star shaped, like 5 pointed star (with really still edges lol). Maybe I misread directions… it seems like in the 4th round I’m doing the doubles and trebles wrong somehow… any tips? =/ Basically as I understand it, I’m doing it in sets: a set of 3 DCs, then 2 sets of TCs… then repeat…. (with chains along the way.) ….yes? No? Close? 🙂

    Thanks again!

    • Ashleigh M. January 29, 2014 at 10:07 pm #

Grrr, I hit post on accident… I meant to say dull edges on my little odd shaped star. 🙂

Also I think I misspoke……. I meant sets of: 3 DCs, then two sets of *3* TCs. Repeat.

      Hope that makes sense… 🙂

    • Pat Hales September 28, 2018 at 2:11 am #

I was confused about the same steps at first. You have 16 chain3 loops. You do THREE sets of 3dc (in the first, second and third loops) then two sets of tc (with two ch between sets) in the fourth loop (this makes the first corner). Repeat three times to work in all 16 loops.

      Hope this helps!

    Please help!!!

sl st into the first chain 3. *3 dc in the first 3 chain 3’s, (3 treble crochet, chain 2, 3 treble crochet) in the next chain 3. repeat from * 3 more times. end round with slip st in 3rd chain at beginning of round.

How does this make a square?

    • Jill November 1, 2014 at 11:29 pm #

I had the same issue😖 After first corner:
      3dc in next 3 ch3sps, 3tr, ch2, 3tr for corner
Repeat around to, ends with 2 sets of 3dc, then join.
